TRUMPETER USS South Dakota BB-57
USS South Dakota was launched in June 1941 and commissioned in March 1942. In November 1942, she joined the battleship USS Washington and several destroyers to form TF 64. The force operated southwest of Guadalcanal against a Japanese bombardment group consisting of one battleship and two heavy cruisers. USS South Dakota received 42 hits, which caused significant damage.
On July 14, 1945, as part of the bombardment group, the ship took part in the shelling of the Kamaishi steelworks in Honshu. This was the first attack on the Japanese home islands by heavy warships. On January 31, 1947, he was placed in reserve and withdrawn from service. The USS South Dakota was awarded 13 battle stars for her service during World War II.
